Situated in the heart of the CBD, St James’ is Sydney’s oldest church. Designed by Francis Greenway and built by convicts in 1824, it is an integral part of the most extensive surviving group of Macquarie period buildings in Australia.

Beneath the church is a large brick-vaulted under croft called the Crypt, famous for its classic converging Gothic arches and the iconic Children’s Chapel.

The Crypt is a unique & exciting venue ideal for cocktail parties, product launches, small themed dinners and special events. It is equipped with a modest kitchen and offers interesting indoor and outdoor spaces including a lovely garden and covered courtyard.

In addition to the Crypt, the Church itself, with its excellent acoustic, makes a spectacular venue for classical and contemporary music events.

VENUE CAPACITies

Crypt - the Covered Courtyard will sit 60 people. Stand-up functions for cocktails etc. will accommodate 125 people comfortably within the main body of the Crypt.
Church - the Nave area of the Church will seat 350 people.

HIRE COSTS

Church: $1750.00 including rehearsal time on the day of the Concert. The use of the Crypt in association with after-Concert entertainment, will carry a fee of $600.00.
Crypt: $1600.00 for the use of the entire Crypt area.Deposits, Insurance and payment details are as per the Contract Forms available.

CATERING

Hirers are invited to use their own catering companies, however St James’ will provide, on request, the names of at least three organisations well-versed in the facilities.

GENERAL INFORMATION

St James' Church and the entire Crypt area carry non-smoking requirements.
Heritage site limited theming applies (especially involving the use of candles in the main body of the Crypt).
