The St James’ Institute presents: Ageing, Mortality and Spiritual Existence Today

Sunday 19 June| 2:00pm-3:30pm | St James’ Hall | $25

Ageing has surprising implications for spiritual life. However, with rapid increases in life expectancy, death denial often impairs our ability to understand what it means to be a human. In this reflection on the theological dimension of ageing, Professor Pickard explores the importance of retaining a sense of human mortality and what it means to bear the image of God throughout the lifespan. He will discuss the pastoral implications of this affirmation and the importance of an understanding of personhood that transcends the biomedical paradigm.

Bishop Stephen Pickard was Executive Director of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture (2013–March 2022), Charles Sturt University, and Assistant Bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn. He continues as a Professor of Theology at CSU writing in the area of church, culture and mission. Of relevance to this address is his article “This Mortal Life: Ageing and Spirituality After the Great Transition” (Journal of Religion, Spirituality and Aging, 2020).
